Evolution of the Packalope

The Packalope evolved in 1990, when I mounted a 6-point deer rack to a vintage 1960s Packer helmet. I started wearing it to my world-famous tailgate parties, where it was an immediate hit . . . everyone seemed to love the Packalope!

Incidentally, the name Packalope came from an episode of America's Funniest Home Videos in which they featured some amateur filmmaker's version of the Jackalope -- a mythical creature in the vein of Bigfoot that's half jackrabbit and half antelope. "Jackalope! Packalope! I think I should call myself the the Packalope!" So the name was born.

As the Packers marched towards their Super Bowl XXXI victory, I converted the helmet to a 10-point rack . . . .after all, a championship team needs a championship rack! New Orleans style Mardi Gras beads and a mini cheese wedge completed the ensemble. The original 6 point helmet is now on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in Canton, Ohio.

If you've never been to Lambeau Field, get there if only for the tailgate parties . . . I park in the same spot every home game. You can't miss my ultra-cool decorated van . . . it's got tons of great Packers decorations and it's topped off with the largest hunk of cheese this side of the moon!

I've met virtually every player to wear the Green and Gold, but I really enjoy meeting the fans! I attend live Packer radio shows five nights a week.

I really enjoy meeting all the great Packer fans, especially the little Packsters! I've even been known to let the kids get their picture taken wearing the exhalted smaller Packalope helmets at my tailgate parties!

I never expected to get the sort of recognition I've gotten lately, either! In January of 1999 I was one of 31 NFL fans (one from each franchise) to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. What an honor! The Packalope has also been seen in TV commercials, Athlon's Sports Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Sporting News, and newspapers all over the country. The Packalope has been voted Green Bay's #1 Tailgater three years in a row by Joe Cahn, Commissioner of Tailgating.

The Packalope has raised thousands of dollars for such charities as the Special Olympics, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, and Cerebral Palsy.

That's the story of the Packalope in a nutshell. Thanks to all my friends and familyand fans, without all their help the world would never have seen the Packalope!
